Updates

In May 2025, Maine passed L.D. 1209, a bill to:
“Create a Working Group to Study the Safety and Use of Small Lightweight Vehicles on Maine’s Roads and Highways, the Systems and Laws Governing Antique Vehicles and the General Improvement of Road Safety.”

This bill is a huge step towards getting mini trucks allowed on Maine roads and to be registered vehicles.

There is still work we can do to push for a proper law that allows these vehicles. The new Small Lightweight Vehicle Working Group (also called the Nonconforming Vehicle Working Group) is now gathering information on the safety, emissions, other state’s laws, and road safety improvements in general that relate to these types of vehicles. When they finish they’ll send a report to the Maine Joint Standing Committee on Transportation. That committee will then decide whether to recommend a bill to fully legalize these vehicles in 2026.

If you are a Maine citizen I urge you to send your own testimony to the Small Lightweight Vehicle Working Group (or Nonconforming Vehicle Working Group) now, as well as the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation once they finish their report.

The Working Group is collecting research until December 3rd, 2025. Now is the best time to send them your testimony. After Dec 3rd the Committee will review the data and submit a potential new bill in early 2026.

Your testimony should include:

  • Why you support allowing mini trucks on Maine roads
  • Any personal experience with these vehicles
  • Why they are safe, practical, or beneficial for the state
